Shift Gears to PGT

Clarence Logan, PGT Company Driver

Flatbedders are a Different Breed

Every truck driver has a story.  Sometimes the stories are similar, and sometimes they are worlds apart.  Always they are individually significant.  Because for all of us, the sum of our experiences add up to who we are, and where we go. In the trucking world, our life experiences lead to the roads we drive.

Take Clarence Logan, for example. When we called Mr. Logan, he was driving somewhere in South Carolina.

Truck driving is a lot like being in the service.

Logan served in the Army, retiring after twenty years and then went into truck driving.  He said that in both of these walks of life it’s necessary to be able to adapt.  “You have to be there on time, and then wait for your load.”  Just like soldiers going to battle, he explained, “you never know what kind of situation you’re going to be in. You just have to be prepared.”

Flatbed driving takes a special breed.

According to Clarence Logan not everybody can be a flatbed driver.  It’s hard work, but it’s gratifying. Because of the nature of the job, a Flatbedder works in all types of weather.  Logan laughs when he observes: “the heat is bad; the cold is bad.” Because of the extra work involved in securing loads, and handling the trailers, a Flatbedder has to stay in better shape than is required by van driving.

Safety and Security of the load is most important.

A load must be properly placed and secured so it doesn’t fall off the truck.  Tarps are used when necessary to protect the cargo.  PGT provides nice bright blue tarps that many of our drivers use for this purpose. Securing the load, safety and precautions, protecting the load…all of these responsibilities fall on the driver.

In his own words:

"I shifted to PGT because they’re a good flatbed company. PGT is known to take care of its equipment, and that’s important to me.  If I call with a problem, the dispatch person at PGT will find out how close I am to a company terminal. PGT takes care of the rest."

We couldn’t have said it better.
